Why POTS Replacement? And Why Now?

Major carriers are moving away from POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service) lines or analog copper lines, towards more reliable and better performing LTE technology. As those carriers move away from POTS, POTS lines are becoming increasingly more expensive for users. The costs of maintaining these POTS lines are going up and the usability of those lines are going down. That is not good for you or your business!

How to Make the Switch?

We make POTS replacement easy! We work with all major carriers. We also have various equipment options to fit any need and budget. Most solutions simply require a device installed at the POTS line that will allow the signal to be transmitted via cellular and wireless networks. This keeps the entire process quick and simple, with no little to no downtime of critical systems. Get a custom POTS replacement solution, whether you have 10 buildings or 100 buildings!

POTS Line Decommissioning Mandate - Congressional Order 10-72A1

“…we find that the public interest is no longer served by maintaining these legacy regulatory obligations and their associated costs. Rather than a foothold for new entrants into the marketplace, they have become a vice, trapping incumbent LECs into preserving outdated technologies and services at the cost of a slower transition to next-generation networks and services that benefit American consumers and businesses.” – Learn More

So, what does this mean for you, the customer? Contrary to popular belief, Congress DID NOT mandate that all POTS lines be shut down. They did however mandate that providers are no longer required to maintain the outdated copper POTS lines. Providers are also not required to keep these lines operational. Since carriers are not forced to maintain these old POTS lines, more of these lines will be decommissioned. This is where the POTS replacement solution comes into play. POTS replacement solutions are cheaper and easier for providers to maintain. They also utilize existing cellular and wireless networks to transmit information. Finally, the monthly service costs for these solutions are less expensive, saving money for you, the customer.

What Are POTS Lines Used For?

POTS System Applications

How Do POTS Replacement Solutions Work?

Your most common type of POTS replacement solution is a router placed at the end of a copper POTS line. This router transfers data via wireless networks and cellular networks, instead of using the hardwired copper POTS line. This keeps a reliable signal to your critical life service lines, such as fire alarms, security systems, POS machines, as well as many other important lines.

POTS Replacement: Fire Alarms, Securtiy Systems, Elevator Emergency Phones

The most critical of services that are still heavily reliant on POTS lines are fire alarms, security systems, and elevator emergency phones. These systems are almost always utilized during an emergency, where seconds count and there is no room for error. If a copper POTS line is damaged or decommissioned and not converted to newer technology, these services could be inoperable when they are needed the most. When a POTS line replacement solution is installed, it converts this line to a wireless and/or cellular signal. This is a more reliable solution that is also cheaper and easier to maintain. That way, when the time comes, these critical life services will function as intended.

POTS Replacement: Blue Light Phones, Gates Systems, Building Call Boxes

Blue light phones, gate systems, and call boxes are most often seen on university and hospital campuses but also in many multi-family buildings and communities. These offer varying forms of security to tenants, students, patients, and staff. Gate systems and controlled access panels allow property managers to restrict and monitor access to properties. If these lines go down, users can be locked in/out of the property also leaving the property vulnerable to unauthorized entry. This can greatly affect tenant experience and also prove dangerous in an emergency situation.

Blue Light phones are typically seen in outdoor and common areas on large campuses. They are used as an easily accessible direct line to emergency services for anyone experiencing an emergency situation. Similar to fire alarms and elevator phones, it is critical that these phones are fully operational. By converting to a POTS replacement solution, both blue light phones and controlled access systems offer better tenant experience and peace of mind during emergency situations.

POTS Replacement: POS (Credit Card) Machines, Voice and Fax

Let’s face it, we’ve all had that annoying experience where we are at the checkout counter and the cashier says, “It didn’t work try again” or “Sorry our system is down.” Stop putting up with unreliable lines for your Point of Sale systems. POTS line replacement solutions for POS systems will improve retail customer experience and help prevent those sales from going elsewhere.

The same goes for voice and fax lines. When fax lines are down, trying to fax authorization letters and other important documents can frustrate employees and clients, alike. If the phones are down, the sales team cannot hit their calls for the day, account managers can’t reach clients, and those customers that need problems fixed asap, can’t get through to speak with a service representative. By converting to a POTS line replacement solution, you avoid the inevitable failing of plain old telephone service lines and future-proof your communications with a more reliable solution.
